Diversity-oriented teaching
Today more than ever, the student population is characterized by its diversity. Research shows that different social, cultural and individual backgrounds and life experiences have a strong influence on the way students learn.
Good teaching is also characterized by the fact that it focuses on the potential of all students and takes different learning approaches seriously. It is necessary to take this diversity into account, not least against the background of equal opportunities, demographic change and the "competition for the best minds".
Recognizing and taking into account the heterogeneity of students can initially be perceived as a didactic challenge. However, successful implementation creates a win-win situation for everyone involved, e.g:
- The use of different methods enables different approaches to content. Tying in with students' individual learning strategies increases motivation and satisfaction.
- Flexible teaching and learning strategies allow students to link the subject matter to their own experiences and interests. Content is better remembered and understood.
- Student orientation also means greater interaction during the course. More intensive exchange encourages individual activity, which can lead to deeper learning and understanding ("deep learning").
- The greatest possible transparency with regard to examination requirements and the coordination of learning objectives in the sense of constructive alignment can lead to more successful examinations.
In order to meet the diversity of all learners appropriately, to create a fair framework for learning and to convey your course content in the best possible way, it is necessary to reflect on the current course and examination design.
We will be happy to advise you on the possibilities and implementation of good teaching, including
- the planning of a course
- the design of learning environments
- the use of methods
- the design of teaching and learning materials, as well as
- Assessment and feedback
