KIT for EVERYONE!

On November 21, 2025, KIT hosted the event “KIT for EVERYONE!”—a full day of activities focused on diversity and equal opportunity. The event gave participants the chance to explore new perspectives, share their own experiences, and work together toward a more inclusive future for KIT.
With “KIT for EVERYONE!”, KIT sent a strong message in the fall of 2025: Diversity and equal opportunity are not just guiding principles, but a way of life. Throughout the day, students, staff, and external stakeholders came together to address issues related to gender, intersectionality, discrimination-sensitive communication, and inclusive collaboration. The program provided space for expert input, personal reflection, and creative exchange.
A Range of Inspiring Impulses in the Morning
The day began with a series of inspiring keynote talks. The opening address was given by Prof. Dr. Annette Leßmöllmann, who spoke about how social debates on sex and gender can be conducted constructively and how insights from research can be meaningfully transferred into higher education practice in her talk “Debating Sex and Gender – Learnings from Research for Practice.” This was followed by Prof. Dr. Petra Nieken’s presentation “Of Data and Discrimination – Bias in AI,” which highlighted the role of algorithmic bias and its impact on different social groups – a topic of particular relevance in light of the growing use of artificial intelligence at KIT. The lecture by Prof. Dr. Christoph Kirchlechner also attracted great interest. Under the title “Listening Instead of Looking Away,” he introduced the concept of trusted contacts at IAM‑MMI and demonstrated how low‑threshold support structures can foster a respectful and appreciative working environment.
The morning concluded with a panel discussion on the topic “Equal Opportunities at KIT – Where Do We Stand? And Where Do We Want to Go?” Representatives from various areas of KIT discussed achievements to date, ongoing challenges, and shared goals for the future.
Networking and Connections at the Market of Opportunities
During lunchtime, a “coffee break” featuring market stalls provided an opportunity for informal networking. Various initiatives, networks, and projects presented their work—ranging from gender equality initiatives and support services to student and academic communities that shape and highlight diversity at KIT. For many participants, this part of the program offered a valuable opportunity to engage in conversation in a low-threshold setting and forge new connections.
Workshops: Turning Knowledge into Action
The afternoon focused on interactive workshops that encouraged participants to get involved. Both German- and English-language sessions were offered to allow as many people as possible to participate.
For example, the workshop “Not with me! – Everyday interventions against discrimination” provided practical strategies for countering discrimination in everyday life through both verbal and nonverbal means. At the same time, the English-language workshop “From Awareness to Action – How to be an Ally” addressed the question of how a willingness to support others can translate into concrete action. Later in the afternoon, the program also featured workshops on role models (“Becoming Visible”) and inclusive leadership (“Inclusive Leadership – Building Teams Where Everyone Belongs”). The sessions impressively demonstrated that diversity and allyship are not abstract concepts, but rather can be learned, discussed, and put into practice.
Cultural Finale: “We are Part of Culture"
The festive conclusion was marked by the opening of the queer art and history exhibition “We are Part of Culture” in the foyer of the Audimax. The exhibition highlighted the diversity of cultural identities and the contributions made by queer figures both past and present. It invited visitors to experience diversity not only intellectually, but also aesthetically and emotionally.
A strong signal for an inclusive KIT
Whether through research initiatives, personal conversations, or interactive learning formats—the “KIT for EVERYONE!” event day demonstrated the depth of commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunity at KIT. The event underscores how important it is to make diverse perspectives visible and to work together to break down barriers and shape a KIT that truly is there for everyone.
